The Anthropocene was coined by biologist Eugene Stoermer in the 1980s, and the term was used in a seminal paper in 2000 by the atmospheric scientist Paul Crutzen.
A group of thinkers led by Jason Moore are now challenging that term, on the basis that it unfairly blames all of humanity for the present onslaught of environmental devastation, when the blame should be put on capitalism and its ideology of endless compound growth.
Moore suggests that Capitalocene is a more appropriate term. He admits that it is an ugly-sounding term, but believes that capitalism is an ugly system which deserves an ugly term.
