Scientist Charles Keeling started measuring atmospheric carbon in the 1950s and discovered it’s been rising every year. This is now called the Keeling curve.
A safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would be 350 parts per million. This level was reached in 1990. We passed the 400 ppm in 2013, a level not seen for 800,000 years.
Ten warmest years on record have all occurred since 1998.
About a third of carbon emissions gets absorbed by the oceans, leading to acidification, which impedes the growth of calcifying organisms such as corals and shellfish.
Unfortunately, fossil fuel companies continue to operate unabashedly. ExxonMobil spends about $100 million a day exploring for more oil and gas reserves.
