Berkana Institute has a Two Loops model which describes the lifecycle of living systems. The two loops are the old system which is in decline, and the new system which is emerging. The practice of supporting the new emergent system is to Name, Connect, Nourish and Illuminate. People play different roles in managing the transition. **Trailblazers** are the first to walk out of the old system, trying to create something new on their own. **Connectors** create networks between the pioneers so that they will be resilient against the inevitable attacks from the old system. **Stewards** are those who uphold the old system and try to make it work for as long as possible. **Protectors** are powerful members of the old system who try to extend protection to the fledgling new system. They create oases for the innovators. **Hospice workers** work from inside the system to soften the blow for those who are stuck in the old system. **Illuminators** are those who articulate the new system and try to make it easier for people to transition from the old to the new. They make the new system visible.
