The latin name for the cacao tree is Theobroma cacao. Theobroma is a Greek word meaning "food of the gods". Linneaus gave the cacao tree its latin name in 1753. During 9/10ths of its processed history, cacao was drunk as a liquid, not eaten as a solid. And 4/5ths of its history takes place before the fall of the Aztec empire in 1521. Its DNA sequence was finally decoded in 2010 by two laboratories funded by rivals Mars and Hershey. Its co-history with humans begins about 4 millenia ago along the Pacific coast of southern Mexico. It follows in succession with the Olmecs, the Mayas, the Aztecs, the Spanish, and other European powers.
