Cadbury, the chocolate company, was founded in Birmingham, England in 1824 by John Cadbury, a Quaker.
In the 1870s, it needed a new factory, and rather than build it in the polluted quarter of Birmingham, George Cadbury decided to create "Bournville", a development just for the workers, which provided housing, swimming pools, heated dressing rooms, kitchens, gardens and sports fields.
In 1906, Cadbury was one of the first companies to offer a contributory pension fund.
When WW1 broke out, Cadbury told all its workers to follow their conscience and to join the war effort if they wanted to. It also guaranteed that they could return to their former jobs when the war was over.
