Yoram Mosenzon:
Classical NVC is the consciousness that everything comes down to feelings and needs. But to go straight to feelings and needs is confronting for many people. So it's better to meet them where they are, with Street NVC, using their own language. If someone calls you an idiot, don't respond by asking if they are feeling insecure because they need belonging. Simply say something like, "Oh, you think I am doing something stupid." Once you get them to say "yes" to a superficial guess, then something opens up, and you can drop one level deeper. Empathy is the art of accessing deeper and deeper layers of the iceberg.
Babies can only smile and cry to express their needs. When someone says "no" to your request, they are not rejecting you, but they have a baby need crying for inclusion.
