[[A Small Farm Future]] Politics used to be divided into the left and right. But these divisions are dissolving. Traditionally, conservatives have been the guardians of a constrained type of thinking, the thinking that life always involves trade-offs, and one has to use judgment to figure out what trade-offs to make. Liberals were associated with more unconstrained, utopian type thinking. But neoliberalism changed the face of conservatism, and turned markets into unfettered engines of perpetual growth. The left hasn't done much to introduce a more constrained type of thinking. In fact, the left tries to expand the benefits of modernity to the rest of the world. There is little room in the current political landscape for talking seriously about constraints.
