Completely anecdotal story from Kevin Behan's "Your Dog Is Your Mirror": During WW2, before patrol dogs were introduced, the life expectancy of an American point man on patrol was 7 hours. When trained dogs were assigned to patrols, the Americans never lost another point man to ambush. Another interesting story is that when Kevin Behan's father was invited to the same radio show as Robert Oppenheimer, he found out that the audience were far more interested in dogs than atomic bombs. Almost every question was addressed to him: "How do I get my dog to sit?" "How do I get my dog to come?"
