The term "ecocide" was coined in 1970 by biologist Arthur Galston to refer to the damaging effects of the defoliant chemical Agent Orange in Vietnam.
In 2010, Polly Higgins proposed to the United Nations that ecocide be considered a fifth crime against peace.
In May 2021, the Inter-Parliamentary Union voted near-unanimously in favour of recognizing the crime of ecocide.
