Gobbledygook was coined in 1944 by Texas businessman and politician Maury Maverick. It refers to language that is pompous and bureaucratic. He drew inspiration from the turkey, which was "always gobbledy gobbling and strutting with ludicrous pomposity. At the end of his gobble, there was a sort of gook." His grandfather was Samuel Maverick, after whom the word "maverick" was coined. Unlike other Texas cattlemen, he did not brand his cattle. A maverick was an unbranded cow or steer. Today, a maverick is someone who defies labels.
