When a brown hare sees a fox approaching, it stands up straight, showing its white ventral (belly) fur. This makes the hare more visible, and it also signals to the fox that it has been seen. The fox knows not to chase the hare, since a hare runs 50% faster. By this clever and counter-intuitive signal, the hare saves both animals the energy of a chase.
