In 2010, a mine in Chile collapsed and trapped 33 men deep underground. They only had enough food and water to feed 10 men for 2 days. The strong did not kill off the weak. Instead, they organised themselves, and distributed rations by democratic vote. They managed to survive until the 17th day, when the outside world found them and could pass food and water through. 52 days later, all 33 men escaped safely. This story illustrates that humans are innately co-operative. They did not descend into selfish violence, like many would predict.
