> Prior to his death in 2008, Dr. Michael DeBakey, the famous heart surgeon, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, and the Congressional Gold Medal for his contributions to public health. At the ceremony, a humorous medical anecdote told by a speaker reflected Dr. DeBakey’s worldwide fame:

> Joe was removing some engine valves from a car on the lift when he spotted Dr. DeBakey, who was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager. Joe, somewhat of a loud mouth, shouted across the garage, “Hey DeBakey—is that you? Come over here a minute.” The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where Joe was working. In a loud voice, so all could hear, Joe said argumentatively, “So Mr. Fancy Doctor, look at this work. I also take valves out, grind them, put in new parts, and when I finish this baby will purr like a kitten. So how come you get the big bucks, when you and I are doing basically the same work?” According to the tale, DeBakey, very embarrassed, walked away, but first he said softly to the man, “While the engine is still running?”
