The SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team was formed in response to the uprisings of the 1960s. Its first mission was against the Black Panthers in 1969.
In the 1980s and 1990s, this trend continued in the War on Drugs and the War on Terror.
By the mid-2000s, 80 percent of law-enforcement agencies in towns of 25,000 to 50,000 had military-style units, compared to 20 percent in the mid-1980s.
