Erik Zimen, an ethologist, trained a pack of wolves in the Italian Alps. He and his wife did an experiment where one of them took turns holding each wolf, while the other led the rest of the pack out of sight. They found that the pack leader was by far the most panic-stricken when left behind. It seemed as though pack leaders needed to be followed more than the others needed to be lead.
