After the Civil War of the 1640s and the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when the bourgeoisie took over Parliament, a series of laws - Parliamentary Enclosures - were passed that accelerated enclosure. Between 1760 and 1870, about 7 million acres, or 1/6th of England, were enclosed by legal writ.
Masses of dispossessed peasants were forced to move to cities and provided cheap labour for the Industrial Revolution.
