Between 1760 and 1870, about 7 million acres, or 1/6th of England, were enclosed by legal writ. Masses of dispossessed peasants were forced to move to cities and provided cheap labour for the Industrial Revolution. Between 1760 and 1845, thousands of Enclosure Acts were passed.
