I think I've figured out why quantification bothers me so much. The way the mainstream uses it is so limited. Most people use quantification to either "rank" or "sum". That's it. We want to know what food has the most calories, which city has the lowest crime, which movie sold the most tickets. In other words, ranking. Mathematics offers so much more than ranking and summing. It never privileges any one element. Instead, it reveals the relationships among elements from a detached perspective, and shows how you can get from one state to another via a series of transformations.
