A story told by Russell Delman.
A Korean Zen monk asked his students, "What is the occupation of a true human being?" After they fumbled through various answers, he said, "Ask me." So they asked him, "What is the occupation of a true human being?" And he replied, "How can I help you?"
Russell's commentary:
In any situation, can I look beyond myself, to what's needed in this situation? Can I bring my care to the scene that I'm in?
It's sometimes important to frame it as, "How can I help you help yourself?" so that we don't look at ourselves as saviours.
