This is the topic of a discussion Ive been asked to moderate. Here I explore my own answers to the question.
'Capital' literally means head. Capitalism is an ideology born out of the rational mind, much like Athena springing forth from the forehead of Zeus. Like Athena, it has always been prepared to do battle. The early days of capitalism were dominated by state-sponsored companies such as the East India Trading Company that ran their own armies. Since those beginnings, it has consistently exploited human bodies, both through overt slavery and extractive wage labour.
As long as capitalism doesn't confront its assault on the body, it can never be reformed. As long as its symbol is the necktie, cutting off the head from the body, it can never be reformed. As long as capitalism doesn't acknowledge the primacy of human needs, it can never be reformed.
