Freinacht, Hanzi. “Another Kind of Freedom & The Spectrum of Judgment.” Metamoderna, March 22, 2020. https://metamoderna.org/another-kind-of-freedom-the-spectrum-of-judgment/. Societies go through stages of development where they achieve greater and greater levels of freedom. But each level of freedom can only be achieved when the previous level has been balanced by the appropriate form of control. Control is important for freedom, because without control, individuals would not feel safe and secure from their fellow human beings. Four stages of freedom: 1. Freedom from fear. 2. Freedom from shame. 3. freedom from guilt. 4. Freedom to achieve our full human potential. When we can control anger and violence, then we have freedom from fear. When we can control social judgment, then we have freedom from shame. When we can control self-judgment, then we have freedom from guilt. When we can control the envy of others, then we can achieve our full potential.
