- In the formative years of our intentional community, developing bylaws and guidelines, working with the county, developing our common spaces, putting in roads, gardens, and utilities as most of us raised young children and held down jobs was profoundly challenging. Familial and cultural patterns of hierarchy, sexism, classism, adultism, ageism, racism, ignorance, and the fears that sponsor them played themselves out in our small circle of well-intentioned people. When triggered by conflict, we do not rise to our higher ideals; we fall back to what we have practiced most in our lives—behaviors born out of the family and culture that nurtured us. Things felt like a pressure cooker of relationships in a house of mirrors that relentlessly reflected back to us our own selves as things unfolded. Our struggles took us far beyond our comfort zones but clarified, at the very least, what we did not know. They also provided ample motivation to find more inclusive, forgiving, and responsible ways to be together.
