None of these attempts succeeded. Political Islam fell prey to infighting and the other two to violent suppression by the colonial regime. Even so, their historical importance can hardly be overstated. The first attempt led to the establishment of the People’s Council (Volksraad), a kind of proto-parliament; the second led to large-scale deportation; and the third to a police state.
