## Highlights
- we only get to live here in this incredibly beautiful, magical world if we understand that the health of the earth and every single one of her weird and wonderful creatures is now the most important consideration. Of all the millions of life forms that live here on this earth, we are the only ones with no obvious modern thread of connection to the web of life. - My dream is that the concept of treating your patch of this planet as an outdoor room will become a thing of the past, and that all of us who are awake and aware of the crisis we are in will turn at least some of our gardens into ARKs, creating a wave of change and empowerment that will quickly build into a roaring tsunami of life. - Every generation has less and less awareness of what a truly healthy living landscape should look like. All over the world, within a couple of generations we have forgotten how abundant and alive the earth, her seas, and her skies used to be. We are dealing with an almost barren planet, but this is the new “natural” to younger generations. ([Location 254](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B09TGQPF7M&location=254))
- On a healthy piece of land that was left to take a breath, the weed-seed bank would emerge as the first line of defence. An ecosystem of pioneer plants would work to restore healthy soil and all its support systems. Soon after, a thicket of thorny plants would shoot up among the heroic weeds to protect fast-growing native trees, which would emerge and further sustain life and promote health, giving way eventually to the large native trees. All stages of an ecosystem are subject to natural disturbances, such as large disruptive mammals or small wildfires, which ensure the whole range of habitats and levels of maturity are always present, creating the maximum abundance of life.
