Erosion of middle-class levees
Many of today's problems are network problems
A poorly designed network does not distribute risk poorly
Siren servers like Google, Facebook, etc do not take any risk
Their legal contracts, for instance, specify that they are not responsible for anything that might be posted on their servers
In the film industry, filmmakers take all the risk.
A well-designed network pays attention to [[Provenance is a magic ball of thread]], where an idea comes from
It is made of two-way links.
In a network of two-way links, Google would not be a viable business model. Google's core advantage is that it has the algorithms that can scan a network of one-way links and figure out which ones are the most important.
In a network of two-way links, we would know where every idea comes from. And each person could be paid for their contribution.
Right now, we are creating all the links for Google, which reaps all the rewards.
In a two-way network, we would not need to make copies. There would be only one original document which everything references.
There is an interesting analogy between making copies and the mortgage crisis. In the mortgage crisis, a bank would own a mortgage, and then sell that to another bank, which would then package the mortgage with other mortgages, and a single mortgage could be sold on multiple times. This is similar to copying a music file. In the short run, the original creator of the music, or the original homeowner who took a mortgage, does not notice the effects. But in the long run, they suffer. The music creator sees the value of his music being driven down, while the homeowner gets chased out of their home.
The financial world is one big network.
What do I want to do with these ideas? Build a better Hotbed? Make a film about it? Right now, when we edit a film, it's hard to go back to the original source footage. We don't have provenance. Is there a way to make films so that we preserve [[Provenance is a magic ball of thread]]? Every clip or edit is traceable back to its source. Could a film be directed by Hotbed, such that it becomes more of a collective enterprise?
